In progress: December 2024

Wind/Water/Salt Chapters 39-51: Nothing.

Persephone (probably not its real name): I think I figured out the ending.
Short Stories: Wrote a new one, on paper. Typed it up. Edited it some. Probably made it worse.

Knitting
  • Blushing Cloud (Knitty S/S24). Started the month with 14 inches of back done. I finished that, cast off the back, seamed the sleeves, and started the edging. I knew I was going to run out of yarn so at that point I just switched from green to pink. It's finished now.
  • Hamilton (Self). Started the month having just started the first sleeve. Now that sleeve is 6 inches long.
  • Seamless seam socks (Knitpicks Pop Socks). Started the month almost done with the second.  Finished that one, started the next. This is the second pair, the last pair for Christmas. And they are done. Maybe I'll knit some socks for myself now. Or when I've got these other projects under control. I wound up with a day when all three projects needed me to look not just at my hands, but at the instructions! Very hard for reading the entire internet on a Sunday morning.
  • Sulaire (Alice Starmore). I had maybe 8 points of the first side of the peplum done at the start of the month, not impressive. Finished the peplums, started the body, attached them, knitted in the car. That body is now maybe five inches long.

Sashiko project: Nothing.

Ruffle skirt: I actually meant to work on this over the year-end break, but that didn't happen.

Purple Romper: Nope.

Best TW feedback ever

Over at the dayjob, SMEs are feverishly trying to get documents back to me all marked up, in preparation for the release that's supposed to happen the week I'm back from VP. Today's best comment: Unfortunately not true. SMEs, they're so cute.

Moraine

So a couple of days I thought I was done with this short story, and I wrote the last line of the story. I even dated it (that's how I can tell it's over). It was a little long, at 6600 words (I was aiming for 5000). But then I was walking to work, and I thought, "My, that was a lame ending. My endings are all crap." So yesterday morning, I scribbled out the date and wrote a bit more. And this morning I wrote a bit more again, and I dated it and called it done. And still, that ending seemed lame. So a few minutes later, in the last paragraph, I scratched out "the Oak Ridges Moraine" and wrote in "that stupid moraine". Much better. Now I can move on. But in the meantime, I was doing a little research about the Moraine, and I discovered that EGTourGuide lives on it. Only by one or two hundred feet, but I thought it was funny. Good for you, EGTourGuide, with all those excellent plants growing on that substandard soil, where in the olden days (you kno...

In process -- December 2016

1st draft More Writing Excuses!   Editing “Rabbits”. Fixed that descent into madness thing. I really like the idea of this story, but it needs so much work! “The Magician’s Ex-Apprentice”. Typed. 2nd draft: removed repetitive crap and implemented marginalia. This cut maybe 700 words out of the story which never should have been 5500 words in the first place. “Vulgar Pony”. Typed and commented on the bad intro. Seems I have learned some things. “Wind/Water/Salt”. I wanted something to put on OWW serially and this seemed the best choice, so I went over the first three chapters and posted the first one so far. You see how I have a lot of projects here? It’s a problem. I constantly switch stories in and out of “active” state, and I don’t necessarily think that for me at this point in my life this is a bad process. But. I spend far too much time looking for things, trying to figure out which is the last draft I was working on, whether I’ve printed off a new...
