In process: January 2022

Wind/Water/Salt

Chapters 31-37: Took up comments.

Someone (a reviewer worried about the marketability of my tone) called it "cozy horror" which I found funny because I don't think of it as horror. Folk horror maybe, though I gather that phrase is overused.

Various people have pointed out the amount of walking that happens in these chapters. Have I mentioned I'm very fond of walking? The above picture is from a morning walk. We were having a blizzard. Four TTC buses were stuck on my street. The first ones left about twelve hours later; the last was there at least forty-eight hours.

Chapters 38-51: Still need to take up comments and revise.

Persephone (probably not its real name): Wrote a ton more progressing from where I had realized the why that things happened that I wrote about last month. I found a process whereby one day I write a dialog spine and then the next day come back and flesh out that spine and progress forward with new dialog spine. This has kept my brain thinking about the story and moving it forward meaningfully while also cleaning things up a bit. Not sure this process will work forever or for all projects, but for now it's a good thing.
Short Stories: I realized the the AITA story was mean-spirited and was relieved I didn't send it to friends. Though it does have two potential audience members.

Knitting
  • Striped long-sleeved t-shirt (self).  Started the month a couple of inches below the armholes on the body (it's knit top-down). This is a great project when I want to read or watch TV, but it's terrible if I want to leave the house because both yarns are on cones. I might have done another couple inches.
  • Tay Tartan cardigan (Martin Storey). Started the month with 8 rows of the back. It would be really cool to finish this this year. My plan was to do the intarsia for the bottom of the back and two fronts so I could join it all together and knit the body in the round, because stranding three colors back-and-forth might be too much for me. Looks good so far, I've set myself a task of tying in 10 danglers per day. It won't be finished this year otherwise. I won't share the activity log of how that went, because it's sort of embarrassing. However, I have started the fair isle section.
  • Extra Whip socks (Coffeehouse knits). Looking at the picture, and then at the instructions,  obviously that couldn't be right. Revising the pattern as I go. I want to do a sweater based on it, so I started this because I need something small and portable, which the other two things are not. I did not get far.

Queen's Gambit skirt: Meant to pick buttons and start buttonholes, but apparently that will have to wait until next month.

Best TW feedback ever

Over at the dayjob, SMEs are feverishly trying to get documents back to me all marked up, in preparation for the release that's supposed to happen the week I'm back from VP. Today's best comment: Unfortunately not true. SMEs, they're so cute.

What I read: August 2023

"The Absolute Book" by Elizabeth Knox. I got it for Christmas. It was delightful, even if maybe some stuff wasn't explained completely. Or maybe that's part of why it was delightful.  "Crucial conversations" By Joseph Grenny and three other old white men. Another office book club selection. The word "candor" comes up a lot. I really resented this book.  LHC #220: "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt. There was a girl at my previous company who wanted to have an office book club, and she had this book on her desk for months and months. I can totally understand this. I found portions crazy stressful to read. Like, I would be skipping ahead to see how much more in the section, could I get through it, pacing around, etc. I wanted to know how it ended, sure, but I was having weird stress dreams and stuff. If it wasn't a library book I might not have finished it at all. It was such a relief when Boris showed up again and something happened. I di

Wind/Water/Salt  Chapters 39-51:   Still n eed to take up comments and revise.  Persephone  (probably not its real name): Nothing but thoughts.  Short Stories:  As I mentioned last month I had a dish-washing epiphany on a story that wasn't going well. I'd already changed the POV character, but I knew that wasn't enough because I had no ending. It has an ending now.  Critted  4  Got back  0    I really need to post something new. Finally finished the danglers and minor seaming and chose buttons, then had to wait to block because the space I normally block in needed to be cleared, and this would be very disruptive to my work, so I waited to block it for the night before I went on vacation. It would appear that the finishing of this sweater took 4 months, which may be a new record. It fits for the most part. Yay!  Cathar  (self). Started the month just about done with the body edging.
