In Process -- Jan 2014

First Draft “Limering”. Now around 30,000 words. Not sure where it’s going. I mean, I know the story, but the worldbuilding is weak. This has happened before, so I’m not worried. Clearly the second draft is where the magic happens.  Editing “Wind/Water/Salt”. Read the whole damn thing with pen in hand. This actually went better than I expected, once I got a plan together. About 11 days from the end of the month I realized I was averaging one chapter per day, and that wasn’t going to cut it, with 47 chapters. So, I made a schedule – realistic, with days I could read a lot, and other days I could read just a little. Getting through it meant I could throw out the handwritten stuff. I deleted the really repetitive bits I mentioned last month and used up some notes I’d made whilst typing. As usual I found myself trying to move more and more things forward in the story, and revised chapter 1. Then I switched chapter 2 and chapter 1, and now I think I have a start at ...

What I read -- Jan 2014

“A Natural History of Dragons” by Marie Brennan. I basically told the boy to buy me this for Christmas, so he did. He started reading it on the subway on the way home from the store, and then had to find another slipcover to put on it so he could continue reading it in my presence. I was sort of wondering why he was reading “7 th Sigma” by Steven Gould again (not that there’s anything wrong with that book), but it   turned out it was the only hardcover he could find in the house that was the same size. So he’s carrying on the family tradition of reading books before giving them away, so when someone gives a book, the recipient can say “thanks, how was it?” He found the author photo at the back intimidating. I loved the narrator’s voice, especially when she dissed her previous book. So charming! “Vicious” by V.E. Schwab . Got it for Christmas because I asked for it. There were some stressful moments reading this book, but VES did a good job moving things along so the stre...

Pain

Last night we were working on a move called Halfsie, which is like a pullover, but only with one leg. You wind up hanging upside down with one leg hanging onto the hoop. It's pretty uncomfortable -- so much so that I could only do it on one side (the right leg over). Which led to a funny conversation. Do I have higher pain tolerance on one side than the other? Last Friday we were sparring at karate, and it went on for quite a while. The longer you spar without a rest, the worse your control gets, so I was blocking badly and wound up covered in bruises. I went home and iced my left forearm and my left foot, and then it was bedtime and stripping down, I noticed that my right arm was also swollen. I hadn't even noticed! Maybe it's because, being a lefty, I use my left arm more? But I also tend to fight in right stance if given an option, which might be protecting my left side more. Weird. Trying to add a picture. It will work better later.

Carmel apple smoothie

2 cups milk 3 scoops vanilla frozen yogurt 2 red delicious apples, cored and quartered 1/4 cup caramel sauce 1/4 cup peanuts 1 banana Blend for 30 seconds, minimum. Serves 3. Constant readers will notice a theme with all my smoothies... We learned a new acro trick this week: Front roll headspring ! The videos seem to be mostly martial artists, which seems funny, though coach Dan did say it's an old trick, and the younger coaches wouldn't even know it. He puts a bit of effort into finding new, interesting things for us recreational people to do.

In Process -- Dec 2013

First Draft “Limering”. I’ve got about 22,500 words or thereabouts.  Editing “Wind/Water/Salt”. Spellchecked. This took far longer than it should have. I thought I was going for low-hanging fruit, and then I spent something over four hours at it. All my editing time this month seems to have been spent knitting gift socks. I read five and a half chapters just so I could say I’d worked on it at all. 2014 will be better. This pass through will be another low-hanging fruit effort, mostly just deleting the repetitive bits and using up the notes. Connecting I suppose SFContario didn’t end until Dec 1, so I can say I did something.  Circulating 2 out there. 9 rejects for 2013 so far. I’d like to get 50 for 2014. That would be awesome!  Knitting Hella Fair isle dress in Kauni. Peplum ¼ done. Need to do the neck and armholes, too, and then block and seam and it’s done! Carousel socks (knitty). Finished. Farmer McGregor socks (sockto...
